There are lessons to be learned from large scale manufacturing.  For example, rather than measure each individual small stone or pearl that you own, you could use a sifter to separate them by size.

In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy teaches viewers how to make an inexpensive sifter from items found in most grocery stores.  All you need are some acrylic (plastic) cups, drill bits of various sizes, a permanent marker, and a drill.  Be sure to make some storage containers that correspond to the various sizes drilled through the different levels of your sifter.
