In this video, Prof. John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates simple additive wax techniques that will help you to create dramatic textures and eliminate the need to hire a stone setter.  Watch as Prof. Ahr makes a wax sea urchin pendant that holds a large faceted cubic zirconia.

Casting gem stones in place is commonly used in manufacturing to speed up production and reduce costs.  The technique can be used with most transparent gemstones.  It cannot, however, be used with Amethyst, Citrine, Topaz or other stones that would experience a color shift if subjected to high heat.  Likewise, this technique cannot be used with organic elements such as pearls or shells.  Nor can it be used with opaque stones such as turquoise, lapis or malachite.  Be sure to do some research about your gem stones before you attempt to cast them in place.
