In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy explains how you can turn holes into design opportunities.
Safety is paramount in any jewelry studio. To avoid the chance that a hollow form might explode during a soldering operation, it is imperative that there be a hole drilled through it. The hole allows steam and internal pressure to be released while the hollow form is soldered shut. But, the hole in your piece doesn't have to just be an ordinary round drill hole.
Using your jewelers saw and some small needle files, you can transform any hole into a design element. For example, if you are making a hollow bead that has a flower shape, why not turn the hole required for soldering into an insect shape? And, why limit yourself to just one decorative hole?
