In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates how to enrich a silver surface through "frosting" or depletion plating.
By repeatedly heating, pickling and brass brushing a piece of silver jewelry, you can create a fine silver surface. The process helps to remove copper and copper oxides from silver or gold that is alloyed with copper. This is a great way to prepare silver for reticulation or hide fire scale (cupric oxide) that can develop below the surface of a sterling silver item during the soldering process.
This is a three-step process: heat, pickle, brass brush. It is important that the fine silver skin developed on a piece is hardened through burnishing processes like brass brushing or tumbling.
