In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy explains how to tune up your hammers to improve their performance.

Many viewers have written to the OJA to ask why their forging projects don't look as good as the examples shown in our videos.  The answer is that they were working with hammers that had not been refined and polished.  Manufacturers do not sell hammers that are tuned up and ready to work with.  You need to break edges, round corners and polish your hammers to achieve beautiful results.
It may take some elbow grease to refine a hammer.  But, it's totally worth the time and trouble.  Working with a hammer that has been refined will produce smooth polished hammer marks and move metal rather than pinch or shear it.

Once you've finished tuning up your hammers you might want to watch our very brief video on hammer covers https://youtu.be/p0PnVVX_TE8
