In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates how to apply colorful patinas to silver pieces using liver of sulfur.

Patination is a great way to enhance the dimensions of a silver piece.  And liver of sulfur is a smelly but fun way to quickly give depth to a silver surface.

Have you ever noticed how silver items tarnish?  They seem to turn shades of blue, yellow, orange and purple before they become a silvery grey.  Well, liver of sulfur causes the same sort of oxidizing on a silver surface.  The really cool part is that if you prepare the metal surface through depletion gilding techniques, you can pump up the color that the liver of sulfur produces.  Likewise, if you perform tests where you monitor the temperature of the water, the amount of liver of sulfur and the exposure time, you can begin to control the color that you get.  Unfortunately, unless you do something to coat your piece and protect the finish, the colors will fade over time.
