In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates a simple way to preserve a bright finish on your copper jewelry creations.
Copper loves to oxidize and turn brown as a penny or green as the Statue of Liberty. Both of these colors are beautiful. But, some people absolutely love copper's clean red color. Dipping copper into shellac can help to prolong the time that you can enjoy the fresh red color of your copper jewelry. Just be sure not to coat earwires with shellac.
In the video I described how to wipe off shellac drips. But, I didn't wipe them off in the demonstration. So, you may see them. Make sure to wipe yours off.
The OJA has videos in its playlist that demonstrate how to apply a patina to copper or heat stain copper. Unfortunately, some colors, especially blues and purples, are lost when you coat them with shellac.
Shellac can quickly wear off, especially if it rubs against your skin. For areas that touch your skin, you might want to paint them with a clear nail enamel.
