In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates how to make soldering risers from an old bandsaw blade.

The steel risers are used to elevate your soldering project over a charcoal block.  Positioning your project in this way allows you to heat your piece from below while igniting the charcoal to produce additional heat.  This method can be further enhanced with the use of a lazy susan.  Turning your work on the lazy susan while applying heat to the charcoal supporting the risers will: heat the piece evenly; reduce exposure to oxidation; and allow you maximum control.
