The consistency of the thickness of a wax model is vital.  Keeping the thickness of a lost wax casting model consistent helps to ensure the success of the casting.  Areas that are too thin can prevent molten metal from flowing to all areas of a casting.  Likewise, areas that are too thick can present problems in the finishing of a piece.

In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates how to make a wax tool that will help you to determine the thickness of wax models made from the same wax.
